Research Areas: Families & Communities
Funding Agency: Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship

This research project is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to provide a better understanding of the experience of Irregular Maritime Arrivals (IMAs) being detained in Australia’s Immigration Detention Facilities. It examines how detention centre organisational culture affects these experiences and will develop a framework for future evaluation and monitoring of detention facilities. The research uses qualitative interviews to build a detailed picture of the detention experience from the perspective of detainees and service providers in Immigration Detention Centres and Alternative Places of Detention. It also includes interviews with other key stakeholders including official visitors to detention centres, detainee advocates and community representatives.
