Developing final indicators of social disadvantage and integration of the indicators within the Legal Aid Means Test

Project Status: Archive
People Involved: Peter Saunders, Melissa Wong
Research Areas: Measures of Social Inequality & Wellbeing
Funding Agency: Legal Aid New South Wales

This project builds on two previous studies conducted for Legal Aid NSW that have set out the conceptual advantages of adopting an exclusion approach to identifying social disadvantage, with empirical illustrations that draw on recent SPRC research on the topic. Legal Aid NSW conducted a survey of its clients in 2010-11 using an instrument built in part on a questionnaire used in SPRC studies of social exclusion. The third part of this project analyses that data and develops an index of social exclusion that is relevant to the circumstances of Legal Aid clients that might form the basis of a new means test.
