Research Summary
Sheila Shaver’s main research interests are in comparative social policy and studies of the welfare state, poverty and social inequality, gender and social policy, community services, and social and political theory. With Julia S. O’Connor and Ann Shola Orloff, she is the author of States, Markets, Families, Gender, Liberalism and Social Policy in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and the United States (Cambridge University Press, 1999). Her most recent publication is ‘Culture, Multiculturalism and Welfare State Citizenship’, La Revista delle Politiche Sociali/Italian Journal of Social Policy 8(1) (2008). She served as Deputy Director of the Social Policy Research Centre from 1990-2003, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Western Sydney from 2003-2006. Professor Shaver currently chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Centre in HIV Social Research and is a member of the New South Wales Department of Community Services Research Advisory Council.
